How Homelessness Affects Society and Families by Perla Medina

Homlessness is something that is seen world wide. Just that some places are worse affected then others. The area, town, even city someone live in affects the amount of homelessness people trying to survive in that area. If you go to a richer state, for example Calabasas in L.A., you would not see as many homeless people as if you went to a state as Baltimore. States can be really affected by the poverty rate and the amount of homless people because it becomes a place people would not want to visit. The then leads to that particular stat to not get as many tourists or foreigners which means less money the state makes. As sad as it sounds, people would consider a place with homeless people dirty, and unsafe. The immediately gives that particular area a bad reputation. Which makes people want to about areas of that sort.
Homelessness can affect families in both a negative and positive note. It gave help families set an exmple for their children but also someone in the family could be in a homeless position. Being homless is a position no one would want to be in. So any parent would want to do anything possible to avoid their children from making those mistakes. Parents can show their children what could happen if they do not go to school or if they do drugs. That helps the child value the blessings they have in their life and want to work harder to become someone in life. But also there could be someone in the family that becomes homeless which also affects everyone in the family. Even though two people are related does not necessarily mean that they would go out of their way to help their family member. That happens to many people which is why even though they may have a family, they still have no one to help them better themselves.

  1. I believe that the number one affect towards homelessness is families. Homelessness has a great impact on families. It may split up or even destroy relationships within the families. Without a family it is hard to continue on in your life. People need support and love in their life or else it will be very difficult to build a life on your own. Having a family makes everyone feel safe and secure. It builds many relationships within the families which keeps families together. Having a family inspires hope and makes everyone feel accepted. No one likes to feel alone in the world. That is why it is so depressing to see families being destroyed by homelessness. People start blaming each other and nothing is ever resolved. All it leaves are people left by themselves.

  2. I agree with many of the points that Perla made. Families play a big role in homeless people's lives. Many people who are homeless do not have a real family. They do not have anyone to care for them and worry about their well-being. There are also homeless people who have a family that just simply does not care about them. Many people are abandoned by their family because of various reasons. Families need to stick by their relatives especially in times of need. Many times though, families are not sure what to do when they have a homeless relative. They are not sure how they can help this person. Society is also affected by the homeless. There are certain areas in certain parts of the country that people do not like to visit because of the amount of homeless people that are present.

  3. Family is very important in everyones lives. Homeless person or not, your family is what keeps you going and motivated. They are your support system, and the people who love you most. If you did not have your family you would feel depressed. Many homeless people do not have someone to look over them, protect and care for them like most of us do. I appreciate my family everyday of my life and everything they have done for me. Not having a support system like a family really makes a difference in your life and the decisions you make. When a homeless person really needs somewhere to possibly go, talk to someone where do they go? Many of them do not have anyone to really give them advice and comfort them. Those who do usually end up getting out of their problems. This is why i always try to give everyone advice and be a good listener because you really dont know who doesnt have someone to care and listen to them. Those that are homeless usually dont have much of a support system, and that is why many of them are lost in what it is they are going to do. This is why we should all try and get out, to help them and make sure they are taking the right path.

  4. Relationships are an essential contributing factor in a person’s life. A life of solitude can lead a person to mental insanity. This is why a good amount of homeless people suffer from psychological issues. I’ve seen homeless people consider rocks, animals, and other not human objects to be friends. Relationships are what make a person who they are. It’s what shapes them and gives them motivation. It all starts with your family. If you ruin all of your relationships with your family you pretty much are left with nothing because at that point who else are you going to turn to? Relationships in your family should never be ruined. Also relationships in cities have been lost. Cities used to flourish with money and happiness but now they have become “home” for the “homeless”. It is unfortunate to say that some people tend to be directed away from the cities because of the homeless population. The cities are where the homeless people feel comfortable because they will always find a passer-by who will give them money or a garbage can that will have half eaten food. This is a shame to say but we need to get these homeless people out of our cities and into shelters and hopefully back on their feet again soon.
